Abstract

The normal adult liver weighs 1400–1600 g. It is situated in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen immediately below the diaphragm. It consists of two lobes, a larger right lobe and a smaller left lobe. Structural unit of liver is hepatic lobule. The classic lobule is hexagonal in shape arranged around the central vein. The lobule consists of terminal hepatic vein (central vein) in the center with portal triads (or portal tracts) in the periphery at the angles of the polygon of the lobule. The pancreas is a retroperitoneal organ, which has both exocrine and endocrine functions. It is transversely oriented extending from the “C” loop of the duodenum to the hilum of the spleen. It measures about 20 cm in length, can be divided into four parts—the head, neck, body and tail. A detailed discussion on the jaundice, viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, liver abscess, hemochromatosis, tumors of liver, pathology of gallbladder, and pathology of pancreas has been given in this chapter. 18 well-labeled figures are also presented in this chapter, which are very helpful for the students or readers.
