Abstract

This chapter gives a brief description on echocardiographic practices in India. Several regulatory bodies including the medical councils (state and the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), Human Rights Commission, Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Specific Laws govern the state of medical practice today. Echocardiography is an established modality in cardiology and is the most commonly used imaging technique to evaluate cardiovascular anatomy and function. Being an operator-dependent technique, it is also prone to subjective errors in the form of measurement variability, missed diagnosis, failure to recognize image artifacts leading to misdiagnosis. This chapter covers the medicolegal aspects of echocardiography and difference of opinion.
