Abstract

Calcific aortic stenosis (AS) is frequently seen in aortic valve disease. Once the valve becomes significantly stenotic and patients become symptomatic, surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) surgery is the preferred choice of treatment to prolong life. SAVR has been the traditional approach to manage these patients. But, there exists a group of patients who are very high-risk for surgery or inoperable, where transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), also called transcatheter aortic valve implant (TAVI), is an alternative way of treating this disease thus reducing symptoms and improved survival. This chapter covers the types of valves, patient selection, contraindications, echocardiography, intraprocedural echocardiography, complications, and postprocedure echocardiography.
