Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the cardiac tumors. Primary cardiac tumors are rare across all age groups. Secondary deposits are 20–40 times commoner and are seen in 1% of postmortem examinations. The most common cardiac tumor in children is rhabdomyoma. The symptoms associated with most primary cardiac tumors are very often nonspecific. Incidental detection during routine cardiac evaluation is not unusual. Echocardiography is the most useful investigation for diagnosis and evaluation of cardiac tumors. This chapter covers the clinical presentations, benign tumors, malignant cardiac tumors, secondary cardiac tumors, and normal variants and other masses. Primary cardiac tumors can mimic many commonly encountered cardiac and systemic diseases. Depending on the location, size, mobility and friability, cardiac tumors can produce a variety of symptoms and clinical findings. Secondary involvement of the heart by extracardiac tumors is far more common than primary cardiac tumors. The symptoms and signs will depend on the location and size of the metastases.
