Abstract

Echocardiography is a very operator dependent study. To perform the best possible echocardiographic examination, it is important that the patient should be made comfortable in the optimum position for the examination, i.e. the left lateral decubitus position initially. It is wise to invest in a patient table with a cut-out in the appropriate position, so that with the patient in the left lateral decubitus it is possible to position the probe comfortably at the cardiac apex. This chapter covers the basic echocardiographic examination, apical views, and reporting. It is helpful to think of the ultrasound beam generated by the probe as a knife, which can be used to “slice” the heart in multiple planes for examination. Theoretically, it is possible to use two-dimensional echocardiography to obtain an infinite number of cross sectional views of the heart. However, it is customary to describe the echocardiographic examination in certain standard views, such as the parasternal views, the apical views, etc.
