Abstract

The use of Doppler techniques permits accurate non-invasive determination of several hemodynamic variables by recording flow of blood through cardiovascular system using ultrasound waves. Nowadays, Doppler echocardiography is also the preferred method of choice for the evaluation of diastolic function. To begin with, an understanding of the Doppler principle is required to follow Doppler echocardiography. In simple terms, the Doppler Effect (or the Doppler shift) is defined as change in frequency of a wave-like signal (sound or light) that is moving relative to its source. The application of this phenomenon to blood flow measurements is, for example, ultrasound emitted from a transducer and reflected from a moving target, i.e. red blood cells. This chapter covers the Doppler equation, Doppler display, continuous wave Doppler, pulsed wave Doppler, modes of pulsed wave Doppler, and the Doppler ultrasound equipment control panel.
