Abstract

The mitral valve was the first structure to be identified by echocardiography. Technical advances have enabled echocardiography to identify almost any anatomic or functional abnormality of the mitral valve. This chapter covers the anatomy of the mitral valve, echocardiographic evaluation of mitral valve, and functions of mitral valve evaluations. A normal mitral valve is consists of an annular ring, which houses the leaflets and is attached atrioventricular junction. The anatomic diagram illustrates the relative size, length and position of the anterior (A) and posterior (P) leaflets of the mitral valve.
