Abstract

Neuropsychiatry is concerned with disorders of affect, cognition, and behavior that arise from overt disorder in cerebral function, or from indirect effects of extracerebral disease. The term has largely replaced the earlier expression ‘organic psychiatry’, which originated in the classification of mental disorders as either ‘organic’ or ‘functional’ on the basis of the presence or absence of pathological changes in the brain. This chapter provides a consideration of practical issues related to the assessment, investigation, and management of patients manifesting cognitive and behavioral change, and discuss specific cerebral and extracerebral disorders that commonly involve or are accompanied by cognitive or behavioral change. This chapter is helpful to the identification of possible diagnoses causing particular behavioral features, and also to alert clinicians to the likely neuropsychiatric sequelae of specific medical disorders.
