Abstract

Phobia is a persistent avoidance behavior secondary to irrational fear of a specific object, activity or situation. Phobias are very common mental disorders seen in the general population. Approximately, 5–10% of the population is affected with phobias. Phobias are often responsive to treatment with cognitive and behavioral psychotherapies, and to treatment with specific pharmacotherapies. The fourth edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV) includes three types of phobic disorders such as agoraphobia, specific phobia and social phobia. This chapter covers the epidemiology of phobia, etiology of phobia, clinical features and diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis of phobia, treatment of phobia, course and prognosis of phobia, and pharmacotherapy.
