Cardiac Drugs

by Kanu Chatterjee, Eric J Topol

The book entitled “Cardiac Drugs” contains thirteen chapters. Worldwide, cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality and the burden of disease is expected to grow even further. So managing these diseases has become a fast growing field with the ever increasing armamentarium of pharmacological agents for treating these disorders. This book contains latest references and guidelines incorporated to keep the information current and relevant. First chapter discusses about the vasodilators and neurohormone modulators. In the second chapter, positive inotropic drugs are elucidated. Positive inotropic drugs increase the velocity and strength of contraction of the cardiomyocyte in which the myocardium and heart are the primary target organs. Hypertension is a common disorder and is frequently asymptomatic. Therefore antihypertensive drugs are used, which is discussed briefly in third chapter. Fourth chapter illustrates about diuretics that are used for promoting fractional excretion of sodium that leads to an increase of rate and extent of urine formation and alteration of long-term sodium balance. From fifth to twelfth chapters, drugs related to dyslipidemias, diabetes and cardiodysmetabolic syndrome, acute coronary syndromes, dysrhythmias, heart failure, stable angina, pulmonary hypertension, and pregnancy and lactation are illustrated in brief. The last chapter gives an outline of the future directions in the role of genetics in drug therapy where there has been a considerable progress in the genomics of cardiovascular drug interactions, but unfortunately some of this is yet to be incorporated into clinical care.
