Abstract

For proper detection and diagnosis of any ailment, a surgeon must be skilled enough to ensure a proper referral and management, and that is why a surgeon should perform an examination in a condition of the bones. This chapter discusses several diseases associated with the bones and the way to correctly diagnose and detect these diseases. Chronic osteomyelitis is diagnosed by presence of chronic discharge from sinuses, fistulas or ulcers. Deformed and shortened limb, functionally compromised neighboring joints, and pathological fractures are other findings in the disease. Brodie’s Abscess is a localized infection of the metaphysis of long bone. It is commonly seen in children and young adults. Osteoporosis is an asymptomatic reduction in the quantity of bone. Osteoporosis is usually not appreciated until minimal trauma causes a fracture. The most common sites of osteoporotic fractures are proximal femur, distal radius (Colle’s fracture), vertebrae, humerus, pelvis and ribs. Osteoporosis occurs most commonly in postmenopausal women. The incidence of hip fractures increases with age. The chapter contains graphic X-Ray images to demonstrate different types of bone diseases such as osteoid osteoma, osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma.
