Abstract

The lymphatic system includes the lymphatics and the lymph nodes. This chapter discusses the lymphatics and the diseases associated with it. Lymphedema is a common chronic affliction of the lower extremities, usually caused by filariasis, a disease caused by nematodes in the blood or tissues of the body causing blockage of lymphatic vessels. Lymphedema occurs mainly from accumulation of fluid within the tissues and commonly involves the lower limbs. Primary lymphedema can be classified as aplasia, hypoplasia or hyperplasia, depending on radiological features. Secondary lymphedema refers to those forms of lymphedema that result from obstruction, obliteration or functional insufficiency of lymphatics due to infections and surgery- or malignancy-related issues. The chapter also discusses the different methods to diagnose and determine the diseases related to the lymphatics, including radiological tests such as contrast lymphangiography and lymphoscintigraphy. In addition to lymphedema, some other common lymph node-related diseases include lymphangioma, filarial lymphadenitis and Milroy’s disease.
