Abstract

The individual who sustains an injury as a result of an accident is referred to as a trauma victim. Morbidity and mortality in nearly one-third of trauma victims can been prevented by proper evaluation and effective initial management. Primary survey is necessary to first recognize and treat injuries that are immediately life-threatening. A detailed head-to-toe and front to-back examination is performed in secondary survey. Procedures of primary and secondary surveys are discussed and adjuncts are listed which help in the patient’s management during primary survey. The secondary survey begins with an evaluation of the head and proceeds downwards. All records should be maintained as most cases are medicolegal cases. Repeated re-evaluation is an essential part of patient-assessment, whether for blunt or penetrating trauma. Most of the fatal injuries are head injuries, maxillofacial injuries, chest injuries, abdominal injuries, spinal injuries, musculoskeletal trauma.
