Abstract

As the presence of psychological factors and psychiatric disorders are being recognized to play an important role in the outcome of several medical and surgical conditions, proper conduct of psychiatric evaluation becomes an integral part of evaluation of patients presenting for surgical care. This chapter discusses the ways to evaluate a patient’s psychiatric condition. Several psychiatric disorders like personality mood and, anxiety disorders, cognitive impairment and substance-related disorders warrant special attention because of the potential for significant complications during surgical care, for example, patients with alcohol and drug-dependence may present with unrecognized acute withdrawal symptoms and inadequate coping during enforced abstinence. In this regard, the alcohol and drug-use history and the past psychiatric history bear extreme importance. The mental status examination is a description of all areas of mental functioning of the patient. Appearance and behavior, the facial appearance, attention and concentration levels and memory capacity are some other important areas that have to be evaluated in a patient of surgical care.
