Abstract

This chapter discusses various types of diseases associated with the skins, nails and hairs in a human body, different types of lesions that may occur on the skins — both primary and secondary — the deformities and diseases in nails. A macule, a primary lesion of the skin, is a circumscribed, flat, nonpalpable area of altered color of variable size and shape without changes in consistency. Secondary skin lesions develop from the expansion or decline of primary lesions, or may be related to the mechanical effects of the primary lesions. The chapter also gives a brief overview through tables of the abnormalities of nail in systemic diseases, basically the shape or growth change. Clubbing is a common occurrence in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, pulmonary malignancy, asbestosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cirrhosis. Yellow nails are seen mostly in diseases such as lymphedema, pleural effusion, immunodeficiency, bronchiectasis, sinusitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
