Tuberculosis (TB) is a known entity to human being for thousands of years although it has been known by several names through the ages. Although TB can affect any organ in the body, respiratory tract is the organ most commonly affected. Tuberculosis of the heart is relatively uncommon and pericarditis is its commonest expression. In contrast, myocardial TB is rare, but must be suspected in a patient with TB if congestive heart failure or arrhythmias or valve dysfunction supervenes. TB has an interesting link with atherosclerosis, but more scientific work is needed to examine the plausibility of this link. Growing incidence of HIV and increasing heart transplants have contributed to resurgence of TB.
