Essentials of Medical Pharmacology

by KD Tripathi

Medical pharmacology is a unique synthesis of basic pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics, which aims to serve the specific needs of medical/pharmacy students as well as of prescribing doctors. This book endeavours to reflect the current status of pharmacological knowledge and therapeutic practices. On one hand, insight gained into mechanism of action of drugs and their biomolecular targets is outlined, while on the other, accumulated evidence about impact of different drugs on therapeutic outcomes is presented. Latest therapeutic guidelines from authoritative sources like WHO, National formularies, National health programmes and leading professional bodies are incorporated. New drugs released in India are included. Important points are summarized in boxes. Use of distinctive headings in a hierarchical order makes the text highly systematic. Representative trade names of available drugs with dosage forms are mentioned. Due emphasis is given to diseases prevalent in India and similar tropical countries, along with their current drug therapy. A new feature ‘problem-directed study’ is included in most chapters to pose an exercise in therapeutic decision making for a realistic clinical scenario. Their solutions are provided in Appendix-1. Four other appendices supply valuable information.
