Incretin Based Therapies

by Sanjay Kalra, Rakesh Sahay, Ambika G Unnikrishnan

This book, Incretin Based Therapies, deals with the prevention of diabetes. The advent of incretin based therapies has now opened a new avenue of possibilities and further empowered the physicians in their quest for optimal control of diabetes and prevention of complications. A tremendous amount of research has gone into the development of this group of drugs, and the fraternity of Indian endocrinologists and diabetologists has contributed significantly to this important development in diabetes research and care. Over the past few years, many new molecules have become available with their advantages and adverse profiles. Despite the ongoing debate, these agents have gained widespread approval and are currently being used as first-line or add-on therapies for inadequately controlled diabetic subjects. This book covers the new and exciting class of the incretin based drugs: the GLP-1 analogues and the DPP-4 inhibitors. It takes readers on an easily readable and understandable journey through the history, to the present, and the future of these agents in the management of diabetes. An easily readable and comprehensible layout helps make complicated concepts look simple. Classification of incretin based therapy into different groups, each discussed separately, gives the reader clarity. For each group, an overview chapter is followed by a focused discussion of various aspects of clinical pharmacology.
