Critical Care Update 2010

by Vineet Nayyar, Roop Kishen, S Srinivas, John V Peter

The book “Critical Care Update” provides common and complex ICU problems. This book aimed at everyone involved in the acute care of patients in the ICU or emergency department or in the practice of anesthesia, medicine or surgery. Among all medical specialties, few are very challenging and complex like critical care medicine. The practice of this specialty requires a thorough understanding of physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and pathophysiology. The defining characteristics of the critical care include the knowledge of basic sciences along with a keen clinical sense, attention to detail and good decision-making skills. However, medical knowledge of the nature needed for an exacting practice of critical care also requires renewal because the technology in ICU and understanding of disease processes evolve with the passage of time. This gap has been filled with the creation of this monograph. Some of the chapters in this monograph are detailed while others provide just an overview of the subject, but each one has been written in keeping with the challenges of our present times. This monograph also covers many of the important issues related to the practice of critical care in our country.
