Face needs to be “esthetic”, “presentable”, “proportionate” and “balanced”. Features and form differs with age, gender and race. The soft tissue drape over the underlying skeleton depends on genetics and local factors too. How the soft tissue is influenced by local factors and how surgery to bone affects this is also well illustrated. Though as clinicians we may discuss about “cutting back” or “advancement” in orthognathic surgery, what the patients envision is how their face (soft tissue) appears after treatment. VTOs have come a long way in envisioning this change. Studies on soft tissue of craniofacial region like nose, lips and chin are few compared to hard tissue studies but they are nevertheless very important as they contribute to final esthetics.
