Abstract

The most perplexing factor in orthodontic treatment is post treatment stability. Many philosophies preach that post-treatment retention is included in the actual orthodontic time period. In the process of deciding the retention protocol, we forget the effect of growth on stability of the results achieved. Knowledge of the growth changes and growth pattern of various malocclusions after the completion of orthodontic treatment should be inculcated in an orthodontist’s mind to forecast the relapse after orthodontic therapy and necessitate a customized retention protocol for every patient. This chapter brings to light the ever changing aspects of growth that should be considered while planning retention for every patient. Retention protocols for various malocclusions are also discussed.
