Abstract

Growth prediction can be defined as the forecast of growth related changes with the objective of predicting the direction and amount of the growth of maxilla and particularly the mandible as well as the timing of the adolescent period. Growth prediction helps in not only predicting the amount and direction of growth of craniofacial skeleton but also the response to treatment. The chapter gives a brief review of the need for growth prediction. The methods used for predicting craniofacial growth can be categorized as cephalometric and non cephalometric methods. Cephalometric methods can be subdivided into template methods, which utilize Bolton and Burlington templates and cephalometric Visualized Treatment Objectives. Non cephalometric methods include methods like Moss’ logarithmic spiral, gnomonic growth, Todd’s equation etc. This chapter provides an explanation to the most important growth prediction methods currently used in orthodontics.
