Abstract

Childhood cataract is the major preventable cause of life-long visual impairment. In recent years technical and technological advances in adult surgery have helped pediatric cataract. The aim of pediatric cataract surgery is to provide and maintain a clear visual axis and a focused retinal image. One of the major challenges for pediatric cataract intraocular lens (IOL) surgery has been the adaptation of a techniques used for adult cataract-IOL surgery. The management of pediatric cataracts is fare more complex than the management of cataracts in adults. The use of bimanual microphaco technique with 2 paracentesis has revolutionized cataract surgery. Most importantly it allows secure placement of the IOL within the confines of the capsular bag and limits its contact with the reactive uveal tissue. Minimal wound is also critical to the success of cataract surgery and can be achieved by the creation of a sutureless incision.
