Abstract

The common eyelid disorders are entropion and ectropion. Entropion or turning of the lid margin is one of the most common lid malposition’s encountered in clinical practice. Irritation, tearing and scaring, ulceration of conjunctiva or cornea are the clinical features. Involutional, congenital, spastic and cicatricial are the four types of entropion. The most common type of entropion is involutional entropion. It affects only the lower lids and is associated with aging. Three suture technique, direct anatomic surgical approach, Weiss procedure are methods of treatment. In congenital entropion entire lower lid and lashes turn inward. Treatment is reattaching or plicating of the lower lid retractors. Cicatricial entropion is caused by contracture in the conjunctiva and the tarsus or both leading to shortening of posterior lamella of lid. It is treated by mucous membrane graft. Spastic entropion is due to recent ocular surgery or inflammation. Treatment of inflammatory eye by antibiotic and steroids. Ectropion is one of the most common malpositions of the eyelid, defined as rolling-out “eversion” of the lid margin away from the eyeball. The lower lid is commonly involved. Patients with ectropion will complain of tearing, burning sensation and redness of the involved eye. Examination should be directed towards recognition of the ectropion and its severity. The management of ectropion depends on the cause, extent and presence or absence of a horizontal lid laxity. Medial conjunctivoplasty, Z-plasty, skin grafts are some of the treatments available.
