Abstract

Aphakic glaucoma in children has always been a difficult problem to manage. Trabeculectomy customarily has a high failure rate with or without the adjunctive use of antimetabolites. The non valve implants such as the Molteno, Baerveldt and Shocket tube have been in use but they had the problemof excessive drainage leading to flat chambers. The advent of the valve implants such as Krupin, Ahmed and Optimed have made have made a great deal of difference. The Ahmed valve because it was simple to use, can be done in a single stage and most important of all, functionedwell is commonly used now. This valve also has the limited tendency for a flat chamber developing. Ahmed valve implantation surgery alone or in combination with medical therapy is successful and safe in themanagement of pediatric aphakic glaucoma.
