Abstract

Managing to give an accurate power to a child, operated in its infancy, following a cataract, is at best a problem. The most important factor to consider are axial length (AL) and corneal power (K), corneal diameter, intraocular pressure (lOP), and corneal thickness. Recording any measurements in a child is, at best, difficult though after the age of 6 or 7 with a little reassurancethe child will cooperate adequately to let that happen. The formulas used for calculation of IOL powers are designed to take into account the final position of theIOL in the eye. Depending on the type of the implant, its relative final position in the bag will be different. The various types of IOL formulas are SRK formula, Holladay I and II, Hoffer Q, and Haigi. Surgeons have taken four approaches to IOL power choice. The approach with piggyback IOLs is being used by many surgeons now. If piggyback IOLs are placed, it is imperative that that care should be taken to remove as many of the lens epithelial cells as possible. Most available IOL optic materials, including PMMA, silicone and hydrophobic acrylic materials have been used for piggyback implantation.
