Tuberculosis of the Skeletal System

The aim of this book is to focus on the tuberculosis of the skeletal system. Tuberculosis (TB) is as old a disease as mankind. The treatment of tuberculosis of skeletal system has evolved from crippled and dismal outcome of prechemotherapeutic era (sanatoria treatment) to current stage where almost near normal function and longevity of life is expected. This book comprised of 3 sections that include general considerations, extra-spinal regional tuberculosis, and tuberculosis of the spine, which are further divided into 26 chapters. The first section covers general considerations in osteo-articular tuberculosis, including epidemiology and prevalence, pathology and pathogenesis, diagnosis and investigations, and anti-tubercular drugs. The second section covers extra-spinal regional tuberculosis, from the hip joint to the shoulder, short tubular bones to sacroiliac joints and tendon sheaths. This section also includes a chapter on tuberculous osteomyelitis (infection of the bone marrow). Each chapter covers pathogenesis, clinical features, radiological findings, differential diagnosis, methods of treatment, surgical techniques, and relevant anatomy. The final section focuses on tuberculosis of the spine, including imaging for the disease, differential diagnosis, operative treatment, and surgical anatomy. This book is useful for all the students, faculty and practicing clinicians.
