Abstract

This chapter provides a brief insight into problems commonly encountered in the neonate during routine obstetric practice. Despite the availability of pediatric services in most hospitals, the obstetrician and obstetric nurses are often the first persons to whom the mother turns with problems regarding her baby. As the first ‘care-giver’ examining the baby, a reasonable awareness of the problems occurring in the newborn is a mandatory requirement for all personnel involved in obstetric practice. Hyperextension of the neck could result in stretching the cervical roots and plexus. Physiologic jaundice of the newborn appears by 48 to 72 hours of birth. Vomiting and abdominal distention are the most common gastrointestinal complaints. While most term infants are able to maintain their euglycemic status, at risk infants, like those born to diabetic mothers or low birth weight infants often develop hypoglycemia. Monitoring the blood glucose levels of these infants constitute an essential part of newborn care. Metabolic problems like hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia constitute the common causes of seizures during the early neonatal period.
