Abstract

Most of the injuries to the birth canal are undoubtedly preventable conditions. It can be prevented by proper supervision and conduction of labor followed by timely intervention. Judicious decision of cesarean can prevent rupture of uterus. A well-timed episiotomy is useful to prevent laceration of vagina and perineum. Sometimes, such injuries may lead to fatal condition. There is also increased morbidity. Prompt detection and appropriate management is usually necessary to avoid such complications. Perineal tears are the most common form of maternal obstetric injury. Rapid stretching of the perineum happens due to mismanaged second stage of labor, precipitate labor and forceps’ delivery. It is important to reduce the risk of perineal trauma because subsequent discomfort may result in significant disability. Repair should be performed according to strict principles and guidelines. Injuries to the vessels surrounding the wall of the genital tract may lead to collection of blood anywhere in between the pelvic peritoneum and the perineal skin and may lead to hematoma formation.
