Abstract

The mechanism of labor involves a series of maneuvers that a fetus undergoes during its expulsion through the birth canal during the journey called birth. Labor is a crucial period at the end of a pregnancy for both mother and the fetus. To understand the abnormalities that may occur during the labor process, it is important to be familiar with the basics of normal labor. This includes the uterine contractions, descent and dilatation and the rapidly changing relationships of the fetus with the maternal pelvis. Journey through the maternal pelvis is the most hazardous of all journeys. Any sort of deviation from the normal process of labor may lead to complications to both of them. So proper understanding of the mechanism of labor helps to guide obstetrician to differentiate normal from abnormal condition during the process of labor so that appropriate intervention may be undertaken, whenever needed to avoid any complication either to mother and/or fetus.
