Abstract

Medical disorders complicating pregnancies are not uncommon. Cardiac, respiratory and endocrine disorders can alter the course of a pregnancy. Similarly, they have significant impact both in terms of maternal and perinatal outcome. Individual medical disorder can affect the specific organ function primarily. Asthma is a common medical disorder in pregnancy. Goal of treatment is to avoid maternal and fetal hypoxemia. Commonly used drugs are effective in majority of the cases. However, the condition may be life-threatening depending upon the degree of hypoxemia as revealed by blood as analysis. In all the above medical disorders in pregnancy, management should preferably done in a tertiary care center. Combined approach by the obstetrician, specialist physician and the anesthetist is needed. There may be the need of intensive care monitoring along with the neonatal intensive care management. There may be abrupt flaring up of such medical disorders in the immediate postpartum phase which needs immediate attention.
