In these days of global transportation and migration, the basic knowledge of tropical diseases has become necessary even for an obstetrician. Tropical disease is often taken to refer to infectious diseases that thrive in hot, humid conditions, such as malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, Chagas disease, African trypanosomiasis, and dengue. Management of a pregnant lady with any tropical disease, needs a multidisciplinary approach to achieve the best results. The severity of diseases in tropical areas is due to widespread poverty leading to malnutrition and low immunity, along with poor sanitation as well as climatic influences. Tropical disease like any other medical disorders in pregnancy is to be envisaged not only in the light of it and its treatment effect on pregnancy and fetal outcome but also the effect of altered immunity of pregnancy on the patho-physiology of the disease progression. The agencies most concerned with improving health in tropical countries include the World Health Organization and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation.
