Abstract

A healthy pregnant mother attends the antenatal clinic to ensure she does not develop complications in pregnancy. A detailed history of the presenting complaint whether it is bleeding or pain should be taken. The past reproductive history must be recorded in chronological order. A detailed history of pre-existing medical conditions including any medications she is currently on should be taken. Family history should include history of consanguinity, multiple pregnancy, diabetes, hypertension, congenital malformations and appropriate counseling. General examination of the pregnant woman includes looking for pallor for anemia, inspection of the conjunctiva for jaundice, recording pulse and blood pressure, and examination of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Abdominal examination is done to rule out abnormalities in growth by symphysiofundal height, abdominal grips are done to know the lie, presentation, size of the baby and the amount of liquor.
