Abstract

Although many questions about testing for andropause remain, the size and other characteristics of the affected population mean that this will be a growing area in medicine for a long time to come. The media has encouraged the perception that testosterone deficiency may be responsible for the decline in vitality noted by many men who are middle-aged or older. As a result, physicians are receiving more requests for testosterone replacement therapy. The relative benefits and risks of testosterone replacement therapy will continue to be studied. Meanwhile, laboratory professionals should be prepared to not only provide the relevant tests (where practical) but to understand the many issues surrounding various approaches to the testing involved. This will put them in better position to advise physicians on testing options and to place any reported results in the proper context.
