In the recent years, new treatments for endometriosis have been investigated. Following the recent evidences that hormonal treatment by vaginal or intrauterine route are becoming of current use for hormonal postmenopausal replacement treatment, contraception or menorrhagia, the administration of progestins, such as levonorgestrel and danazol, answers to some problems related to the long-term management of endometriosis. A case-control study, the vaginal administration of a gel containing danazol (100 mg/day in 0.2 ml) for four months effectively reduced dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain related to endometriosis in 24 women.
