Abstract

This chapter starts off with terms used in infection control and mentions about various routes of infection transmission in dental operatory set up. Then decontamination is discussed in detail, followed by explanation about Spaulding instrument classification. Common infections that are encountered and spread in dental operatory set up are explained. Infection control methods like personal protective equipments, disposal of clinical waste, overview of aseptic technique followed during and after each patient appointments are discussed. Section on disinfection discusses about methods of disinfection and disinfectants used are explained. Instrument reprocessing and sterilization methods used for sterilization are discussed in length. Newer infection control concepts like single use disposables, unit dose are explained. The chapter ends with specific infection control protocol for handpiece usage, impression making, and usage of extracted teeth for lab purposes.
