Abstract

Nano is derived from the Greek word for dwarf. It is usually combined with a noun to form words such as nanometer, nanotechnology or nanorobot. Nanotechnology is engineering of molecularly precise structures. The term ‘nanotechnology’ was coined by Prof Kerie E Drexler, a lecturer, researcher, and writer of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is defined as “A field of science which aims to control individual atoms and molecules to create computer chips and other devices which are thousands of times smaller than current technologies permit”. The aim of nanotechnology is to manipulate and control particles to create structures with unique properties and promises advances in medicine and dentistry. Nano dentistry is the future of dentistry in which every procedure will be performed using equipment and devices based on nanotechnology. It will become possible to replace teeth in a single procedure with ultimate accuracy using a combination of nanomedicine and biotechnology.
