Abstract

The concept and practice of esthetic dentistry now is common in most clinics around the world. Retention of restorative materials to the surface of the tooth structure by means of adhesion is carried out routinely. The development and regular use of adhesive materials has begun to revolutionize many aspects of restorative and preventive dentistry. Attitudes towards cavity preparation are altering since adhesive materials have been invented. Now it is no longer necessary to produce large undercuts in order to retain the filling. Adhesive techniques have greatly expanded the horizon of aesthetic dentistry. Correction of shapes, positions, dimensions and shades of teeth is now possible with the adhesive restorative materials. Many problems that dentists face regarding the failure of restorations are due to lack of adhesion. Numerous studies are going on to develop materials that truly adhere to both enamel and dentin. The production of a stable long term bond to the tooth substance is an ideal requirement for the success of all restorations. An adhesion permits the placement of a more conservative restoration, reduces microleakage and dentin sensitivity. A solid understanding of biological, chemical and physical aspects of these adhesives is very essential for their proper use in field of dentistry.
