Abstract

Over millions of years of evolution the teeth have gradually developed a specific shape, with fundamental curvatures at certain areas on each tooth representing successful adaptation towards the maintenance of the teeth within the dental arch. In other words, the curvatures aid the teeth in preventing disease, damage; bacterial invasion and calculus build up, dispersing excessive occlusal trauma and biting forces and protecting the gingiva and periodontium and thus, increasing the life expectancy of the tooth within the dental arch. During operative procedures these curvatures should be restored properly in order to maintain the health of teeth and their supporting tissues. Adequate restoration of teeth needs tooth separation and proper matrix selection.
