Abstract

This chapter discusses tumors of the cervical trachea, where the typical patient with a primary tracheal tumor presents with imperceptibly progressive respiratory symptoms. A tracheal tumor should be suspected in adult-onset asthma or audible breathing of recent duration, where hemoptysis is more common in lung cancer than in any other tumor of the trachea. Every patient suspected to have a tracheal tumor should undergo endoscopic examination of the airway, no matter how debilitated, seemingly unresectable, or highly obstructed. Three treatment modalities may be considered for tracheal tumors, such as endoscopic resection by various techniques, radiotherapy, and tracheal resection. Bronchoscopy may be performed to relieve airway obstruction, where endoscopic resection using the rigid bronchoscope is suitable as an immediate intervention even if evaluation is incomplete.
