Abstract

This chapter discusses skin cancer, where skin cancers can be broadly classified into nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC) and cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM). Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cutaneous malignancy representing 75 percent of NMSC. Most of the BCCs arise on sun-exposed areas of the head and neck and 30 percent are found on the nose. Approximately 10 percent of BCC is the superficial type that present as plaques or macules. The first-line treatment of BCC is generally agreed to be surgical excision with predetermined margins of clinically normal tissue. Major risk factors include basal cell nevus syndrome or xeroderma pigmentosum, sun exposure, fair complexion, Celtic origin, previous actinic keratosis, previous SCC or BCC, or Bowen’s disease of skin. Depending on the size and location of the tumor in the head and neck, it is not always possible to achieve primary closure after excision.
