Abstract

This chapter discusses oral cavity cancer, where smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are the principal causes of oral cancer with floor of the mouth and lateral border of the tongue being the sites most commonly affected. The vermilion surfaces of the lip are part of the oral cavity, but cancers of the lip are caused principally by sun exposure. The oral cavity encompasses the region from the vermilion border of the lips anteriorly to the junction of the hard and soft palate superiorly and anterior tonsillar pillars and circumvallate papillae inferiorly. The oral cavity is divided into several anatomical subsites, such as lips, tongue, floor of mouth, gum or alveolar ridge, hard palate, buccal mucosa with upper and lower buccal sulci and retromolar trigone. The inactivation of tumor suppressor genes is believed to play a more prominent role in the development of solid tumors than the activation of oncogenes.
