Abstract

This chapter discusses cancer of the temporal bone, where majority of temporal bone malignancies in adults are of epithelial origin and these were often located in the external ear. A high prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) types 16 and 18 has been found in the middle ear squamous cell carcinoma, where possible mechanism of infection of the middle ear could be from the respiratory tract via the Eustachian tube. Tumors involving the temporal bone usually originate from the external auditory canal. Two categories of surgery are available for addressing tumors of external auditory canal (EAC) and middle ear (ME), which are EAC resection with removal of the tympanic annulus, tympanic membrane, the malleus and the incus, and formal temporal bone resection which includes the bony structures of the entire petrous temporal bone, including the tegmen superiorly, the bone over the lateral dural sinus and the posterior fossa dura posteriorly.
