Abstract

This chapter discusses training of a head and neck surgeon, where globalization of knowledge base and technological advancements mandate that the training programs in head and neck surgery raise standards and deliver uniform care for patients with head and neck cancer worldwide. Training programs in head and neck surgery, however, were unknown in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Most members of the society of head and neck surgeons were general surgeons with additional training in surgical oncology including head and neck surgery. The highest priority was given to free time for family. The stringent standards for the approval process of a head and neck fellowship program did not achieve uniform quality of training. The clinical caseload in several fellowship programs was not adequate to develop proficiency and expertise in all aspects of head and neck oncologic surgery. The basic training will provide sufficient exposure to introduce head and neck surgery.
