Abstract

Therapeutic agents may be introduced in the eye by topical, periocular, intraocular or systemic routes. Antimicrobial agents may be antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides or broad spectrum antibiotics) or synthetic chemicals like sulfonamides, sulfones, fluoroquinolones. Idoxuridine, acycloguanosine, ganciclovir, trifluorothiminidine, adenine arabinoside, zidovudine and foscarnet are common antiviral drugs. Antifungal agents may be polyenes (amphotericin-B, natamycin, nystatin) or imidazoles (ketoconazole, miconazole, fluconazole). Role of vitamins specially vitamin A is important in ophthalmology.
