Abstract

Phosphorus is a macromineral important for formation of bones and teeth; regulation of enzyme activity; as a constituent of coenzymes and nucleotides; as a buffer and as a component of phospholipids. Serum inorganic phosphate levels are regulated by calcitriol and parathyroid hormone. Fiske-Subbarow method, one of the earliest and well accepted methods for estimation of serum inorganic phosphate, involves formation of ammonium phosphomolybdate and its reduction to molybdenum blue. Procedure of this method is elaborated. Serum inorganic phosphate levels are useful in monitoring renal failure, hypoparathyroidism (increase), vitamin D deficiency, hyperparathyroidism and Fanconi syndrome (decrease).
