Abstract

In a clinical laboratory a routine urine examination involves tests for all these abnormal constituents of urine, physical tests and microscopic examination. Reducing sugars, proteins, ketone bodies, blood, bile pigments and bile salts are the abnormal constituents of urine. Reducing sugars are detected by Benedict’s test; ketone bodies are detected by Rothera’s test; Proteins detected by Heat coagulation test or sulphosalicylic acid test; Blood detected by Benzidine test; Bile salts are detected by Hay’s test and bile pigments are detected by Fouchet’s test. Variations in physical characteristics of urine may be physiological or pathological.
