This unconventional book, addressed primarily to medical students and doctors, is designed to impart the knowledge and skills required for translating the science of nutrition into food-based recommendations. Besides general principles, the book goes into the practical details of applying the principles to framing diets for healthy persons of various age groups, for pregnant and lactating women, and for patients in a wide variety of clinical situations. “The book contains what every graduating physician should know, whether he or she is destined for general practice or a specialist career”, says (the late) Prof. V. Ramalingaswami in his foreword to the book. The book, although simple, is based on up-to-date scientific information. The format of the book is that of a series of exercises that would, besides making the reader indulge in some calculations, leave on his mind a lasting impression. Further, the book can be easily adapted for a tape-slide programme or a multi-media presentation.
