Among an estimated 20 million unsafe abortions that take place in India, about 5 million women are in the age group of 15-19 years. They also make up about a quarter of the nearly 70,000 women who die every year from abortion related causes. Young women from low socio-economic status are at an increased risk of injury and death due to unsafe abortion in comparison to others. An increasing number of adolescents are experiencing sex before marriage and a gradually diminishing average age of first sexual experience, both demand recognition. Nearly 20% of 1.5 million girls under the age of 15 years are already mothers (Census 2001). Many studies indicate sexual violence, lack of awareness about sexual and reproductive health issues among the adolescents combined with experimental or forced sex, leave adolescents vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies, STIs and HIV/AIDS thus creating a huge public health issue in India. The unmarried adolescents remain out of the ambit of family welfare programmes in terms of contraceptive access and services, particularly the abortion services. In addition, societal taboos, parental disapproval, institutional neglection and restrictive clauses in MTP Act all combine to accentuate the issues related to teenage pregnancy. Reproductive health needs especially adolescent reproductive health needs, are poorly understood and addressed in India. In order to eliminate unsafe abortion and early childbirth, there is need to ensure access to legal and safe abortion services for adolescents. This book aims at increasing awareness of ARSH issues in the professionals of all the specialties dealing with adolescents, as ARSH is closely related with high risk behaviour and mental health problems and substance abuse. This book contains 48 chapters in 16 sections covering almost every aspect of gynecology and adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Immensely useful to a cross-section of professionals from gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, mental and public Health professionals, family physicians, community workers dealing with adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
