If the solubility test for haemoglobin S does not produce result then the other screening test known as the Sodium Metabisulphite test is employed. The test is based on the principle that sodium metabisulphite, a reducing agent deoxygenates blood and the haemoglobin S carrying, otherwise normal looking RBC start sickling in a hypoxic state.
